New Instructor

Aengus Kennedy has joined the team at the Rathmullan Sailing and Watersports School. A native of Dun Laoghaire and resident of Ramelton, Aengus is an ISA certified Senior Instructor with years of sailing, racing, and instructing experience. We’re happy to have him at the helm of our evening Start Sailing and Basic Skills courses and hope to see him teaching some Improving Skills and Kites and Wires courses a little later in the season. We’ll keep you posted.

New Boats on the Way

Great news, we have two new boats on the way for the 2010 season – the versatile and fun Laser Bahia. (That’s a Bahia in the picture above.) Perfect for adventure sailing or learning to sail with kites and wires. We’ll keep you posted on our plans for these little beauties.

Oh, and let’s not forget the new Pico we’re adding to the fleet and six new sea kayaks. Summer 2010 should be a fun one.

Rathmullan Beach Clean

You wouldn’t think it with the dusting of new snow on the hillsides, but Spring is well and truly  here. To honour the start of a new boating season, the Rathmullan Sailing and Water Sports Club is organising a Spring Clean of Rathmullan Beach. The event is scheduled for  April 10th, from 12noon to 2pm.

Kids, families, adults, school groups, other clubs – everyone with an interest in keeping Rathmullan Beach clean is invited to join in on the day.  The more hands we have, the lighter the work.

For anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a member of the new Rathmullan Sailing and Water Sports Club, committee members will be on hand to explain the benefits of membership and the plans for the upcoming season. Information on courses offered by the Rathmullan Sailing and Water Sports School will be available. The school’s fleet of Pico dinghies as well as its new safety boat will also be on view.

Hope to see you there.

Rathmullan’s Got a New Club

That’s right – The Rathmullan Sailing and Water Sports Club has been called into existence and they’ve chosen as their logo the anchor rendered as a traditional sailor’s tattoo you see above.

Following the excitement and interest stirred up by the arrival of the sailing school last year, a committee formed to shape the foundation of a new club. This group has been meeting every two weeks over the winter to put the necessary structures in place, drafting a constitution and formulating safety statements, opening bank accounts and arranging insurance coverage, planning events and setting goals for the 2010 season. With that now in place, all the Club needs now are other people interested in joining. To find out more about the benefits of membership contact the club at rathmullansailingclub@gmail.com.

All new members get their very own anchor tattoo transfer, so join in and wear the anchor proudly!

Frostbite Regatta

Boats are a fairly uncommon site on Lough Swilly in January, but a good crowd gathered on Rathmullan Beach on January 2nd to watch five relay teams race the sailing school’s Picos in our first Frostbite Regatta. As you can see from the picture, it was a stunning but cold day with the temperatures hovering around freezing and plenty of snow on the hills to prove it.

Rathmullan House generously warmed everyone up with bowls of soup and we raised a bit of needed cash towards new equipment. All in all, a great winter’s day on the water and the beach. The traditional New Year’s swim in Rathmullan always draws a great crowd to the village every January 1st. We hope our annual Frostbite Regatta will now do the same for January 2nd.

Thanks to all who helped organise and support the day especially Kevin McAteer, Paul Deeney, Mickey Griffen, David McGloin, and George O’Hagan and his team from the RNLI.

Paul Deeney documented the event for us in the video below.
